Monk’s Cabin
A monk’s ‘Kuti’ is a small simple dwelling that supports him in his spiritual practice. A place of solitude, reflection and meditation that embodies the values of simplicity and non-attachment in monastic life
This is a second project for the Cittaviveka Buddhist Monastery at Chithurst see also: https://www.noelwrightarchitects.co.uk/projects/monastery-building-west-sussex/ , and a second project utilising hemp-lime as a building material : see other project page https://www.noelwrightarchitects.co.uk/projects/oak-frame-new-eco-house/
The hemp-lime was in the form of pre-made blocks which are combined with a structural timber frame. Exposed timberwork is of local grown douglas fir. The roof is of fibre cement sheeting.
A key quality of hemp-lime construction is it’s ability to create naturally comfortable conditions with a steady internal temperature; its inherent insulative qualities create warm and easy to heat conditions in winter, and in summer it dampens out the high mid-day temperatures.
Favourite aspects of this project are the soft lines, splayed window reveals and rounded corners made possible by the hemp-lime blocks, which can be literally carved to shape. This is complemented by the natural colours of the finishes – unpainted lime render and plaster, and the timberwork.
